Our precipitation monitoring network consists of two different types of rain gauge instruments, which differ for the type of sensors and data transmission, a weather radar, a weighing rain gauge, a disdrometer, and a weather station. Each rain gauge is identified by means of a 7 character alpha-numeric code where the first 5 letters indicate the type of instrument.
The initial code ISCOD identifies an ISCO 674 Rain Gauge that uses a tipping bucket design with a 20.3 cm diameter orifice and a 0.1 mm resolution. Data are collected by a data-logger and transmitted to a local DB via GSM. The initial code PLUVI, or DIIAA, identifies a rain gauge produced by the LIVEAL SRL that uses a tipping bucket design with a 20.3 cm diameter orifice and a 0.2 mm resolution. Moreover, this type of instruments are equipped with a Lambrecht 8096 thermo-hygrometer sensor for the measurement of air temperature and relative humidity. Data are collected by a data-logger and transmitted to a local DB via GPRS.
The weather radar is a X-Band mini Weather Radar, non-doppler, with single polarization, and a maximum range set to 108 km, produced by the ELDES SRL. The weighing rain gauge is an OTT Pluvio2 – 400, with a collecting area of 400 cm2 and a recording capacity of 750 mm precipitation. The disdrometer is an OTT - Parsivel2 that uses a laser-optic sensor to measure precipitation. The weather station is equipped with a tipping bucket rain gauge, a thermo-hygrometer sensor, an air pressure sensor, a global solar radiation sensor, and an ultrasonic wind speed and direction sensor.
